University of Cape Coast
The University of Cape Coast has issued a communique calling for caution and safety among students in particular and the university community in general following a heavy deluge that left many parts of the campus flooded on Friday, 19th June 2026. The rains lasted for a period of about 7 hours and have inundated many parts of the university campus as well as surrounding communities which provide hostel accommodation for the school’s large student body.
The communique enjoins UCC students and the university community to avoid the following areas till further notice:
* Avenue Circle (Science Roundabout)
* Zenith Bank Area
* Behind SWLT (Behind Shatta Wale Lecture Theatre)
* Ayensu
* Parts of Sasakawa Road
* Part of Kwaprow
In widely circulated videos on social media, many parts of the school campus and the surrounding communities were submerged, with students scrambling for safety, some wading through the waters and being carried on piggyback to and fro from their destinations, surprisingly even to write quizzes in the midst of the heavy inundation.
One thing is clear, though: the skies are not clear and the rain is not over because some meteorological reports suggest that there could be heavier downpours in the coming days, as widely circulated on the socials.
The floods may take a while to recede; hence, UCC admonishes students and the university community to be cautious and plan their movement on and around campus. The flooding issue of UCC has been immemorial, existential and easily predictable in the face of any long, heavy downpour.
Many uninhibited parts of the campus, especially the vegetative cover is largely waterlogged, so any spillover flood from the neighbourhoods of Abura, Amamoma and even Kwaprow after a heavy rainfall compounds an existential flooding tendency.
