Legon SRC issues an update on academic user fee hike.

Following concerns from the student population, the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has issued clarification on recent increases in fees paid to third parties by students.

In a statement from December 16, 2025, the SRC stated that a Telecel data fee of GH¢312 had been imposed in error. The Finance Directorate is now attempting to resolve the problem. The initial payment for the data package is GH¢122. 64 for the entire year for students who choose to participate, but there are no Telecel data expenses for students who choose not to participate.

In addition, the SRC declared a new tax of GH200 to support the construction of SRC hostels. The purpose of the fee is to fund the development of an SRC hostel facility that will address on-campus housing issues. The center is anticipated to provide low-cost accommodation for around 15,000 pupils when it is finished.

The SRC observed a 20% rise in the costs of UGEL Hall. The SRC and Junior Common Room (JCR) administration opposed an initial suggestion of a 29% increase, leading to discussions that reduced the increase. Increased utility expenses, such as those for water and electricity, are the cause of the rise.

The SRC reiterated its unwavering dedication to ensuring the well-being of students and enhancing campus life by highlighting its ongoing interaction with university officials to discuss issues pertaining to costs and housing.
